Transistor is similar in that way, though Bastions gameplay felt more compelling to me. I've found that Bastion actually gets quite difficult with all gods enabled, to the point that there are plenty of meaningful differences between weapons - the fun comes from trying different loadouts, seeing what works and what doesn't, and trying to beat the trials with weapons you enjoy. The gameplay of both games is indeed rather light, but you can make them more difficult through ingame options though (which I've always thought to be an interesting move) - "limiters" for Transistor, and "Gods" in Bastion - unfortunately, you need to mostly finish the games in order to unlock them all. Of course Jaunt() can be used even when Turn() is on cooldown and combined with other powers to do some useful stuff, and eventually you can get a second copy of it which is invaluable, but it's always going to have that "Turn(), defend, Turn(), defend" rhythm. If you fundamentally don't like the Turn() mechanics, they don't really change much. Fighting in real-time is clumsy and basically just a worse version of Bastion, but there's a ton of meat to the turn-based system once you start playing with the different abilities and how they synergize with each other.īut that's all sorta dependent on you getting into the rhythm of the combat. Turn(), do some kind of combo, then go on the defensive until Turn() is ready again. If you're not pulled in by those, you probably won't get much out of it.Īs for Transistor, you should pretty much be playing it like a turn-based game. The big selling points of Bastion are really the narration, aesthetic, and music. And I say that as someone who is generally a fan of that sort of hack & slashy stuff - I adore Ys for example - so it's not too surprising that you find it boring if you're not as into that. I'd describe Bastion's combat as competent, but not particularly inspiring.
